An Introduction

Sometime in the spring of 2017, I was lamenting a particularly long work day with a friend and a fresh pint. Although this perked us up, we were wondering if there was a better way to make a buck. As the evening progressed, we found ourselves contemplating if opening a brewery would be feasible. After all, what could possibly be better than making delicious beer for people? And since there are breweries popping up everywhere, how hard could it really be?

Well, as we found out, starting a brewery is not always high fives and cold beer. There are months looking for that perfect location, successes followed by setbacks, decisions that can strain partnerships, and a litany of never-ending paperwork. But as the old adage goes, “nothing worth having comes easy”. So after two years of hard work and perseverance, we are finally renovating an old bar in beautiful Castlegar, BC that will soon be the home of Tailout Brewing.

A brewhouse is going to look great in there

Moving forward, the main purpose of this blog is to provide as up-to-date information as possible on our construction progress but as an introduction, I will try and answer a couple questions that people often ask us.

First off, given that there are a number of breweries in the Kootenays already, why set up shop in Castlegar?

Well, Castlegar is at the heart of the Kootenay Region complete with legendary rivers lined by old-growth forests and surrounded by beautiful mountains. This is the kind of place where you can ski a powdery fall line in the morning and swing for aggressive rainbow trout in the afternoon. So why Castlegar you ask? Everything that we love doing is here. There just needs to be a place that you can relax with a locally made craft beer after a day of adventures. Enter Tailout Brewing.

What is better than an evening on the river??

What in the heck does Tailout mean anyways?

As you have may have noticed from our logo, we really like fish. It is this passion for fishing and enjoying the outdoors (ideally with a cold pint) that has taken us on this adventure. In homage to our fishing roots, we chose a name that reminds us of that perfect spot on that perfect river. Let me explain. Imagine a classic freestone river that is winding its way towards the Pacific though the forests and mountains of BC. There is rock wall that the river hits where the water is forced to make an abrupt turn creating a slow, deep pool. At the end of the pool, there is a spot where the current picks up and the water becomes shallower. The river bottom turns from sand to rock. This is the Tailout. This is where the fish are.

The big fish always sit in the Tailout!

Will Tailout Brewing have a tap room?

Absolutely. We will be selling both pints and growlers to start in our 1500 sq/ft taproom. Once open, feel free to sit back, enjoy a pint, listen to local music, and enjoy an intense game of cribbage.

When will Tailout Brewing be open?

Summer 2019. We will give everyone an exact date when we near the end of renovations.

I think that’s it for Tailout Brewing’s first blog post. Stay tuned for blog post #2 where I will show some before/after pictures of the beginning of renovations. Quite the difference!!

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you this summer!

Cheers,

  1. Great website & blog. Can hardly wait to take a road trip with friends from Edmonton to visit your taproom and sample your brews. Of course, we’ll have to try several pints of each of your beers so we can determine which we like the most. Tight lines!!
